Axar 21* off 5; DC get over the line and to the top of the table

Three sixes from him against Jadeja to close out the game with 2 balls to spare. Dhoni explains that the decision to hand him the ball was because Bravo was not fit. It was between Karn and Jadeja.

What a maiden IPL hundred for Dhawan. He is all smiles. Rightly so. Forget those drops, outside of those he was sublime.

CSK can't forget hose drops. They'll rankle. Even if Rayudu had held on to one well past Dhawan's 50, they could have closed this out.

Dhawan gets maiden 100; DC need 17 off 6

No celebration after what's been a top innings because Sam Curran has bowled a gun 19th over. Dhawan keeps strike with his 100th run but DC need 17 off Bravo's (?) final over. Oho What drama!

Oho Scratch that! Jadeja is bowling the final over!

Carey falls

Never got going. Hits a full toss down du Plessis's throat at long-on. A bit of a shock as Dhawan is adjudged caught behind on 99. But he reviews immediately and the decision is overturned.

More Dhawan magic

He stands and admires a pick-up six over long against Sam Curran. There's another nonchalant flick wide off mid-wicket. He is into the 90s now. 30 to win off 3 overs!

Can Dhawan get his maiden 100 here?

DC need 51 off 30. Dhawan needs 21 for his 100.

* He has to now. A fourth drop. Sitter at extra cover. Rayudu the fourth man to drop him tonight (Chahar, Watson, Dhoni the others)

Rayudu however has held on to a ctach to dismiss Stoinis. Gone for 24 off 14.

Shikhar Dhawan...

... has just swept Dwayne Bravo from a metre outside off-stump for four. He's in that zone. And CSK have dropped him thrice. 62 to win off 36

Stoinis has begun well too. A six and a four off Karn Sharma and now Dhoni has a problem on his hands. He has only 1 over of Bravo for the death. Thakur and Curran will have to bowl there. He has to bowl one more over of spin.

A breakthrough for CSK

Bravo concedes a boundary to Iyer with a rank ball down the legside and then gets his man, who looks to hit big but finds du Plessis at long-on. End of a 68-run stand.

Required rate Under 10 now

CSK bleeding boundaries here. Sam Curran comes back and Dhawan pings the returning Curran for two boundaries. Running away.

Third 50 in a row for Dhawan

This one's been off 29 balls. Ganesh Chandraskeran has already written about his improved strike-rate. Check it out here. It looks ominous for CSK at the moment.

As I type that he's been dropped for a third time. Dhoni the culprit now. So the three drops have come at 25, 27 and 50!

Hari Sadanandan @iamharry_88 Dhawan seems to have added a new T20 version to his game in the last couple of years. Refreshing! #DCvCSK 04:47 PM • Oct 10, 2020

Chancy Dhawan kicks on

CSK fielding under the spotlight once more. They should have had a third wicket and Jadeja should have struck in his first but Deepak Chahar horribly misjudges a catch at long leg. Next ball Watson's laboured dive is not enough to get close to an uppish shot. It results in a 13-run over for Jadeja.

Meanwhile Chahar has bowled out his 4 overs for 2-18. But that catch might just sting CSK more.

PowerPlay - DC 41/2

Call it a draw. Chahar took those two but DC have their two in-form players in now and they can take on spin through the middle. Iyer has played a delectable loft off Thakur into the stands. He loves this grounds.

Interesting to see how Jadeja, Karn will bowl here.

Two in the PowerPlay for Chahar

He's back to bowling multiple overs in the PP and taking those wickets. Rahane is the second one he gets tonight. The DC man is making room to slash one on the off-side but he hits it flat and straight to Curran at point, who takes a sharp catch.

29/2 after the PowerPlay. Iyer is in and has shrugged off a blow to his leg (off his inside edge).

Dhawan starts confidently

He's playing the field well in the early parts of this innings. There's a pull from outside off and a loft over mid-on against Sam Curran. Off Chahar, he plays an up and over shot over short third-man. 18 after three overs!

Duck for Prithvi

Prithvi Shaw had already fallen five times in six innings to Deepak Chahar and he doesn't last more than two deliveries tonight against the swing bowler. Chahar pitches one on a good length and it moves away from the batsman after pitching and Shaw only manages to chip it back to the bowler. CSK have their early wicket. Shaw could have been extremely dangerous especially with these short boundaries. Rahane is in early.

13-ball 33 for Jadeja; CSK reach 179

32 off the last two overs from Rabada and Nortje and 67 from the last 5 gives CSK something to bowl at. Remember this might still only just be par. There is dew out there so bowling those change of paces are not easy to execute. But take nothing away from Rayudu (45* from 25) and Jadeja (33* from 13).

Prasanna @prasannalara 172 par csk 7+ Jadeja and karn Sharma bowling will decide the fate of this match.Expecting jaddu to end up with man of the match award 03:42 PM • Oct 10, 2020

Rayudu gets a move on; Dhoni falls

Rayudu can be a dangerous basman on this pitch. He loves dancing out of his crease to fast bowlers and hitting them over the top. He takes on Stoinis, covering up for 1 Ashwin over, and deposits him in the mid-wicket stands.

He charges at Nortje and hits him over extra cover for a six and flicks the South African past short fine for another four. Between those two shots, however, Nortje has Dhoni caught behind for 3.

Second-time lucky for Dhawan

Same place, similar catch. This time he holds on. The earlier drop costs only 7 as Faf falls for 58 as Rabada gets Delhi the important breakthrough with his 50th IPL wicket.

Deepu Narayanan @deeputalks Fewest balls to 50 IPL wickets 616 KAGISO RABADA * 749 Lasith Malinga 760 Sunil Narine 766 Imran Tahir 797 Mohit Sharma #DCvCSK 03:09 PM • Oct 10, 2020

A drop and a review lost

DC have dropped a review and a catch to dismiss Faf. Iyer and Nortje take the decision up after Nortje nails a yorker to Faf. But Faf appears to have jammed the ball on to his pad. There's a deflection on UltraEdge but it could be of bat hitting ground too. Not enough evidence to change the decision.

Meanwhile, Axar has bowled out 4 overs for 23 once more! But he should have had Faf. Dhawan's dropped a catch running in from long-on. Not easy, but not difficult either! Faf was on 51 when dropped.

Du Plessis leads CSK's charge

Excellent batting from the former South African captain. Ashwin overdoes the carrom balls in his second over and concedes three boundaries. Tushar Deshpande is then drilled straight back over for a six and then he brings out the lap for another four.

A 39-ball 50 for Du Plessis but Watson is cleaned by the returning Nortje. End of an 87-run stand. Quite a comeback from the South Africa. After giving away 14 in the first, he gives just 2 in his second.

Spinners in tandem; 8 in 2 overs

Three carrom balls in Ashwin's first over and he lands them well. Axar Patel and he have given away just 8 through overs 7 and 8 and the CSK run rate has dipped below 6 once more. Time-out. Time to kick on once more.

Du Plessis breaks the shackles

First four overs brought only 15 runs and a wicket but CSK get going in the fifth as Du Plessis takes down compatriot Nortje. He's reading him like a book, plays a lap for a six. Steps out at the right time to drill one through extra cover. And another chipped four over long-on makes it 14 off the over.

Rabada's over, the sixth, brings two boundaries and CSK have 39/1 in the PowerPlay. One Axar Patel over negotiated so far. No sign of Ashwin as yet

Hari Sadanandan @iamharry_88 Faf was always going to be CSK's best bet against Nortje. That's expected but this aggression wasn't. Super stuff from Faf #DCvCSK 02:23 PM • Oct 10, 2020

Sam Curran falls in the first ball

Big blow for CSK because he's the tempo setter for them. Sharp short ball from Tushar Deshpande and Sam is hurried into the pull and the top-edge flies to third man where Nortje completes a nice catch.

TOSS: CSK opt to bat; Kedar Jadhav returns in place of Piyush Chawla. Still no Rishabh Pant for DC.

Teams:

DC:Prithvi Shaw, Shikhar Dhawan, Ajinkya Rahane, Shreyas Iyer(c), Marcus Stoinis, Alex Carey(w), Axar Patel, Ravichandran Ashwin, Tushar Deshpande, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje

CSK:Faf du Plessis, Shane Watson, Ambati Rayudu, MS Dhoni(w/c), Kedar Jadhav, Ravindra Jadeja, Sam Curran, Dwayne Bravo, Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur, Karn Sharma

Prelude - Can DC do the double over CSK?

A cat-and-mouse chase at the top of the points table is afoot. Mumbai Indians - the four-time champions and the current holders - have reached a stage in the season where they look without a flaw across the board, but DC are still hot on their heels. They are in fact behind only by NRR, and a win will take them two points clear at the top - albeit having played an extra game.

While the chasing pack jostle among themselves to make the cut for the playoffs, DC here have the chance to continue putting daylight between themselves and them. That will put them in contention for the top two spots that come with an advantage of a second chance in the knockouts.

CSK meanwhile, will probably have an afterglow from their previous victory - over SRH. Stephen Fleming and MS Dhoni have repeatedly spoken about finding their best combinations and plugging a boat full of holes, which they seemingly managed in the last fixture. It was, per Dhoni, as close to perfection as they've managed this season. Their NRR is still a worry (-0.390) but a run of results in the second half of the tournament - when the conditions are expected to get friendlier to their spinners - could easily offset that issue. With so much cogestion in the middle, that 'run' might have to begin right away.

What happened in their last meeting?

DC played it smart in the PP overs, smashed their spinners in the middle and then outmuscled CSK with their match-ups game (Remember, Axar Patel bowling in the PP to get rid of Watson?).

How have they fared in Sharjah?

CSK featured in the first game that was played in Sharjah this season, and were blown away by Sanju Samson's six-hitting skills. He hit 9 eye-pleasing ones in his 32-ball 74 as RR got 216/7. In reply, Murali Vijay struggled and only Faf du Plessis looked to bring intent to the table. But it wasn't enough. It was a strange run-chase, that ended with CSK falling 16 runs short.

DC have two wins in two fixtures at the venue, and will hope to close out with a 100 percent record tonight. They've managed to play two different kinds of games to take all the points on offer - first, against KKR it came via a Shreyas Iyer special - 88 off 38 balls - that took DC to the highest score of the season - 228/4. In their next game, they bowled exceptionally well to not just defend a sub-200 total (184/4) against RR, but did so with so much aplomb that they walked away with a sizeable margin of victory - by 46 runs.
